Water Conservation
The growing demand for limited water resources is compelling water providers to pursue water conservation. Hydrosphere has helped clients develop strategies for both agricultural and municipal water conservation.
- Experience in the variety of water conservation measures that have been successfully used in the western U.S., including an understanding of why they have worked
In the water conservation arena we offer:
- A solid knowledge of the client's water supply system and its underlying demographic, land use and cultural variables
- Expertise in integrated resource planning
Our long-term experience with irrigation districts, conservation districts, state water courts and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation were put to use in the production of two comprehensive water conservation manuals, Achieving Efficient Water Management: A Guidebook for Preparing Agricultural Water Conservation Plans and Incentive Pricing Handbook for Agricultural Water Districts. These documents are being used to help the 600 water districts that are supplied by Reclamation projects comply with the water conservation requirements of the Reclamation Reform Act of 1982.
For municipalities, we have developed effective demand reduction programs tailored to clients’ water use patterns and based on expert understanding of the saving potentials from conservation and retrofit programs, rate structures, and voluntary and mandatory restriction programs. We are experienced with the practical aspects of implementing these programs.

On the supply side, we have helped clients quickly implement short-term options including substitute water supply plans, agricultural water leases, water exchanges and trades, reduced instream flow bypasses, operational changes to minimize evaporation and transit losses, and construction of supplemental wells.
