Metropolitan Water Supply Investigation

In 1993, the State of Colorado initiated and sponsored the Metropolitan Water Supply Investigation (MWSI), a multi-year, $450,000 study of water supply opportunities in the Denver metropolitan area, that would: a) maximize use of existing water supply infrastructure, b) emphasize cooperation among water providers, and c) encourage integration of individual water supply systems.

Hydrosphere was selected by the State of Colorado to be the lead consultant and manager of the MWSI project. In this role, Hydrosphere has served as "technical facilitator" to a 47-member Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The final MWSI report is available as one of our selected publications.

  • The MWSI Project has focused on four areas of cooperative water supply opportunity:
  • Conjunctive use of surface and groundwater
  • Effluent management
  • Interruptible supply arrangements with agricultural water users
  • Integration of individual water supply systems

  • Hydrosphere's responsibilities have included:
  • Management of the consulting team
  • Leadership of TAC meetings
  • Development and compilation of numerous sources of data on technical, institutional, and environmental issues
  • Analyses to support cooperative discussions among the various water providers
  • Development of discussion tools illustrating various water supply opportunities with respect to critical operational, facilities and institutional variables
  • Preparation of working papers presenting various complicated subjects in an easily understood and comprehensible manner
