Resource Disc Volume 1.0

Hydrosphere's Resource Disc integrates windows software and multi-agency databases for convenient data research and curriculum development. The disc contains three datasets: an NCDC "station finder" dataset, a USGS "station finder" dataset, and a watershed dataset. GIS coverages are also included.

Nationwide "Station Finder" Datasets
These are summaries of reported data for all current and discontinued NCDC and USGS stations in the US, including the Pacific Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The datasets are useful for looking up what stations are in an area, for finding stations that observe a particular parameter and for surveying summary statistics on the period of record data for a station. There are over 62,000 USGS stations, reporting streamflow, stage, and related parameters. There are over 28,000 NCDC stations reporting rain, snow, temperature and evaporation.

Watershed Dataset
This is a full-content dataset containing all current and discontinued data for USGS, NCDC and EPA stations in two small watersheds: the Guadalupe River in Texas and the Iowa-Cedar Rivers in Minnesota/South Dakota. These watersheds offer material for developing curricula on GIS, flood management and water quality studies, among others.

GIS Content
ArcInfo and MapInfo coverages are provided on the disc. There are nationwide point coverages for the "station finder" stations, as well as nationwide state and county polygon coverages. The watersheds come with point coverages for the stations, as well as state, county, hydrologic unit code polygon coverages and Reach1 and Reach3 arc coverages, clipped to the watershed areas.

Viewing Software
The data are accessed using Hydrosphere's windows interface. You can search the Resource Disc databases for stations by name, ID, state, county, lat/long or elevation, using dialogue boxes and pick lists that facilitate easy database searching. You can also search for stations based on the specific parameter(s) they measure, the number of years of data they have, or on statistical values for the data (maximum, minimum and mean) measured at a station. Data views display pertinent information while point-and-click buttons instantly print or copy it.
