Hydrosphere Staff

Steven T. Setzer

Staff Engineer II

Mr. Setzer is an engineer with seven years' experience in the development and application of decision support systems, water rights modeling, and groundwater quality and quantity modeling.  Mr. Setzer will be playing a key role in the expansion of Hydrosphere's RiverWare services and add depth to our existing water quality and groundwater modeling practices.

Prior to joining Hydrosphere, Mr. Setzer worked for the Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems at the University of Colorado at Boulder. At CADSWES, he was one of the principal developers of RiverWare, designing and implementing new engineering algorithms to extend the capabilities of the software, and supervising water resources graduate students in RiverWare model development.

Additionally, he was responsible for training RiverWare clients and working closely with river basin managers to optimize RiverWare to suit their various applications.  For example, he worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to incorporate flood control operations for the Kansas and Arkansas River basins into RiverWare, and he developed a rule set to model the operating policy for the St. Mary Canal in the Milk River and St. Mary River basins in Montana.

Other areas of expertise include groundwater quality and quantity modeling. He has recently worked on a team investigating a conjunctive use project in the Middle Rio Grande Valley.  That particular project incorporates surface and groundwater interaction into RiverWare.

As a researcher, Mr. Setzer designed and implemented a particle tracking model to analyze solute transport in a circular pipe with a reactive biofilm. Part of this work included extending Taylor’s 1954 dispersion results to accommodate the effects of Reynold’s number on dispersion.

Mr. Setzer is an Engineer in Training and holds an MS in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Colorado and a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University.
